2003. The author reported for work at the Belmont Mine in 1953, fresh from
graduation as a mining engineer from the Colorado School of Mines. He describes
the months that followed as he advanced from pounding boulders on the grizzly to
driving drifts, raises and stopes including blasting and timbering. Years later,
after moving up the management ranks, Schlosser reflects on his months in
Butte’s hottest mine as some of the most valuable training that he had
experienced. Pen and ink drawings illustrate various aspects of underground
