 H877  THE WHITE PINE COPPER DEPOSIT, ONTONAGON COUNTY, MICHIGAN by Walter S. White and James C. Wright, 1954. Reprinted with permission by Robert Fox, 2005. Copper, largely in the mineral chalcocite, is found in the lower most beds of the Nonesuch shale over many square miles near White Pine. The Copper Range Co., through its subsidiary, the White Pine Copper Co., mined a multimillion-ton body of low grade ore. Who ran the mines, how were the mines named, who was in charge, etc? This book will surprise people with details of iron explorations as far west as Bayfield County. A sort of “Who was Who” of the old-time iron men in northern Wisconsin. Completely footnoted, indexed and illustrated, with locations pin pointed. The earliest location dates back to the 1840’s. H861  THE BELMONT MINE – 1953 by Bob Schlosser, 2003. The author reported for work at the Belmont Mine in 1953, fresh from graduation as a mining engineer from the Colorado School of Mines. He describes the months that followed as he advanced from pounding boulders on the grizzly to driving drifts, raises and stopes including blasting and timbering. Years later, after moving up the management ranks, Schlosser reflects on his months in Butte’s hottest mine as some of the most valuable training that he had experienced.
