 H745  THE DREDGE AND ITS GALLERY by T. Kilgore Splake, 2005. One of the most attention-getting copper mining reminders of Michigan’s copper mining is the old mining dredge resting against the Torch Lake shoreline, between the village of Tamarack and Mason on highway M-26. In 1931 C&H Mining Company had Bucyrus-Erie Co. of Milwaukee build the dredge. This book is a photo essay about the dredge today. Color photos, soft cover.  C&H1  C&H LAB CRUSHED COPPER ORE SAMPLES – These test samples are rarely seen today! The copper ore was crushed to different sizes so metallurgical tests could be performed in Calumet & Hecla’s laboratory. The ore samples are stored in round wooden containers, approximately 1 7/8” dia. x     1 ¼” high with cover on. A code number is written on each box. H771  OLIVER’S IRON MEN by Bruce K. Cox, 2005. The author includes a brief history of the Oliver Iron Mining Company, a subsidiary of Andrew Carnegie’s iron empire and later part of United States Steel Corporation. Oliver came to the Gogebic Range in 1897 and operated  most of the major mines in and near Ironwood, Michigan. This book gives some of the background on Elbert Gary, president of U.S. Steel, and the annual awards given to longtime employees. Includes short biographies of seven men who worked for the company for 50 years or more. 50 pages, illustrations, large size, soft cover, spiral binding. $15.95 postpaid.

FC1 FLOAT COPPER – This is a “super” float copper from Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, weighing 4 ¾ pounds. The float copper is approx. 8”long x 4” wide at the widest point. H180  ADVENTURE MINING COMPANY SINCE 1850 by Dianne R. Portfleet, 2005. This is a well written and documented book that tells the history of the Adventure Mine, located in Greenland, Michigan. This copper mine dates back to 1850. From 1850 through the 1920’s The Adventure Mining Company removed thousands of tons of pure native copper and silver.  MIMP MARQUETTE IRON MINING PARTNERSHIP: REPUBLIC, MICHIGAN (O.P). In 1952, construction of the facilities was started and by 1956 production was underway. The solid vertical wall of this open pit iron ore mine extended one-half mile and rose 600 feet above the pit floor. This mine is no longer in operation.
