Happy New Year! Winter is upon us again in Wisconsin. For some reason we always seem to procrastinate about the approaching cold and snow and then wake up one  morning to below freezing temperatures and snow.  Oh well, I guess that is why we live here!! Actually, I have always enjoyed winter, ever since I was a small boy.

I have tried to find a nice selection of books, mining antiques and related paper items. I hope that you enjoy looking through this Newsletter and find a few items that you will want to order. Please let me know if you are looking for any special books?

 H925  OURAY & SAN MIGUEL MINING 1882-3 by William Weston, 2006. In late 1882 and 1883, William Weston, a mining engineer and promoter, corresponded with Denver newspapers about the mines of Ouray County. Eventually this rare publication, which gives details about every active Colorado mine at the time, came about as a result of this correspondence. 164 pages, 45 photographs and illustrations, 1 map, soft cover. $14.95 postpaid.

 H922  TIFFANY BLUE by Patricia McCrew, 2006. Patricia is the great-granddaughter of James P. McNulty, the superintendent (1892 to 1919) for the American Turquoise Company, of the Tiffany turquoise mines south of Santa Fe, New Mexico. This book contains mostly new and original information. Until now, the documentation for turquoise mining in Territorial New Mexico has been scant. 388 pages, 120 black & white photos and illustrations, soft cover. $21.95 postpaid.

 H920  MINING AMONG THE CLOUDS by Harvey N. Gardiner, 2002. This book covers the Mosquito Range and the Origins of Colorado’s Silver Boom. In the summer of 1871, two prospectors ventured high up Mount Bress in Colorado’s Mosquito Range. There they discovered an out cropping of silver ore in blue limestone. This began the silver boom that gave rise to Leadville, laying the foundation for Colorado’s Silver Decade. Has been out-of-print. 132 pages, photographs, soft cover. $15.95 postpaid.

 H917  AUBURN, OREGON by Alan Patera, 1992. Credit for the discovery of gold at Auburn is given to Henry Griffin who discovered gold on October 23, 1861 on what became known as Griffin’s Gulch.  H654  THE WHITE PASS AND YUKON ROUTE: A PICTORIAL HISTORY by Stan Cohen, 2005 printing. The Klondike Gold Rush spawned the railroad in 1898. The line was built to alleviate the hardships of the gruesome trip over the passes to the gold fields in the interior of the Yukon. By the time the railroad was completed in the summer of 1900 the rush was over, but the White Pass Route survived and continued for 82 years to provide a link between the Yukon and the outside world. The mining rush to the White Pine District in northeastern Nevada in 1868 was certainly not the largest or most significant of the mining rushes of the 19th century, nor did it have a lasting impact in terms of generating a permanent settlement.  MLP  MINER’S LUNCH PAIL – Approximately 9” high, 7 ¼” in diameter, made of aluminum. This pail was found in Michigan’s Copper Country. There is two sections to the lunch pail. The top section is removable. Wooden handle, good condition. $65.00 postpaid. (One available)

 HBP  BRASS PIN – HANNA IRON ORE CO. – 1 ¼” dia. with pin back. This mine was located in Wakefield, MI. Hanna Iron Ore Co. is stamped into the pin around the top half. No. 88 is in the center and Wakefield is at the bottom. These pins are quite scarce! Very good condition. $35.00 postpaid. (One available)
