Happy New Year! Here in Oshkosh winter maintains a strong grip on our area. As the wind howls outside and snow continues to fall, we are hunkered down inside for several months. Oh well, that’s why we live here!!

Alvarez, 2004. “Ecstatic cries of Gold on the American River!” in 1848 launched the largest voluntary migration in the history of the world. H675  THE MINES & MINING MEN OF MENHENIOT by Stephen Bartlett, 1944. In 1843 lead was discovered in this East Cornwall village and miners poured in from West Cornwall. Soon massive engine houses dominated the skyline and a new mining district was born. This is an excellent book about the Eagle Mine of the New Jersey Zinc Company which was located in Gilman, Colorado. The mine operated until 1981. You will enjoy reading this book! FC1  FLOAT COPPER – This is a “super” float copper from Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula weighing approx. 4 ¾ pounds. The float copper is approx. 8” long x 4” wide at the widest point. V22  VIDEO – ROOTS OF STEEL: THE EMPIRE MINE. The Empire Mine is located at Palmer, Michigan, at the site of an earlier Empire mine which operated from 1907 to 1928. The Empire Mine was the first to produce high-grade pellets from Michigan’s low-grade magnetic ore and the first iron ore processing mill in the country to use fully autogenous grinding. The mine produced its 50 millionth ton in July of 1978. The mine is operated by Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company. VHS $20.00 postpaid.
