Mine is located at Palmer, Michigan, at the site of an earlier Empire mine
which operated from 1907 to 1928. The Empire Mine was the first to produce
high-grade pellets from Michigan’s low-grade magnetic ore and the first iron
ore processing mill in the country to use fully autogenous grinding. The
mine produced its 50 millionth ton in July of 1978. The mine is operated by
