As I write this Spring Newsletter, my thoughts turn back to our spring of last year which resulted in severe flooding, causing millions of dollars of damage here in Oshkosh. The high school that my grandson goes to sustained over five million dollars in damage alone. Hopefully we will have a better spring this year!

Here is the story of a mine that because of its very high grade of ore, endured two fires, a large surface cave in, a flood that destroyed a great shaft and caused many deaths. COPPER REPLACED BOULDERS – CENTENNIAL #6 MINE – These Rhyolite pebbles have been replaced by copper in the conglomerate ore body. Very unusual! I have the following specimens. Each has been cut to expose the cross section showing the copper replacement. A coating has been applied to the specimen to keep the copper from tarnishing.

 CRB1 COPPER REPLACED BOULDER – Oval shaped, approx. 4” long x 3” high, weighs approx. 1 ¾ pounds. Lots of copper! Matching pair. $59.95 pp.

SC3  SILVER/COPPER NUGGET, HOUGHTON COUNTY, MICHIGAN – This is a large nugget, approx. 2” x  1 ½” x ½” thick. Approximately 75% of this nugget is covered with silver. Weighs approx. 5 ½ ounces. $155.00 pp.

WP1  WHITE PINE SHEET COPPER, WHITE PINE MINE, WHITE PINE, MICHIGAN – This sheet copper specimen with a small amount of black shale to accent the copper is approx. 11” long x 8” high. An esthetic piece! Displays well. $89.95 pp.

 FC1  FLOAT COPPER, KEWEENAW COUNTY, MICHIGAN – This is one of the finest float copper specimens that I have had. Size approx. 9” long x 6” high, weighs 7 pounds. Attractive green patina with part of the top polished so the copper exhibits a nice contrast with the green patina. Specimen has a  neat curve to it. Displays well! $95.00 pp.

DATOLITE SPECIMENS  - Datolite is a borosilicate mineral (hardness: 5 – 5.5) It is associated with native copper deposits in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. At times, specks of copper or silver appear with the datolite. I offer the following quality specimens.

 D1 DATOLITE -  CALEDONIA MINE, ONTONAGON, COUNTY, MICHIGAN –  Pinkish red color with areas of white. Nice accent! Size approx. 1 ½” x 1 ½”. Top of specimen has been polished. Displays well!. $40.00 pp.

D3  DATOLITE – CENTENNIAL MINE, HOUGHTON COUNTY, MICHIGAN – Really a neat matching pair of green datolite with copper. The green and brown colors produce an interesting contrast of colors. Size approx. ¾” high x ½” wide. (Oval shape) Mounted on Plexiglas base. (Removable) The pair mailed postpaid. $50.00.

DC2  DOLOMITE CRYSTALS – “GEMMY” – Another neat lustrous specimen from the 880 foot Draw Level, Ropes Gold Mine. Size 8.1 x 3.1 x 5.0 cm overall. These specimens are quite scarce coming from the historic Ropes Gold Mine. $40.00 pp.
